Why is there a character limit in questions? What if a person is relating a long experience?

So in my USO post, I was attempting to relate my experience, when I got cut off, a-la-twitter style, with '0 characters remaining'. I had to post and then return and 'edit' it to finish my thoughts.
Is this a glitch? If not, if it's intended, it's a HORRIBLE call -- many people have more than the, what, 500 characters? (I didn't even notice, but it wasn't more than a large paragraph!) that seems to be the limit.

Greg, if you want to share a long experience, please use the "Post Update" option, which as you can see when you hover over it, says "Share pictures, personal updates, plans, or whatever you like!"
"Ask Question", is as defined is for "Get expert advice for your questions." It sounds like you want to relate an experience, not seek expert advice. So please share your story using "Post Update".
If you're wondering why this is, it's because it turns out that experts who are answering people's questions don't want to read long novels... they just want to answer actual questions. This helps those seeking help as it enables more people to quickly identify topics they can help in. If a user wants to share a long story (and even ask a question about it), we created the option for him to do so with his network by using "Post Updates"

SN Greg Wright - Can you clarify where exactly you have to re-type your answer? Which field are you typing in?
We're aware of some of the issues with Chrome and we're working on it. Getting as much detail as to what people are actually experiencing helps us nail down the issues. Thanks again for all your feedback, and sorry for the inconvenience.

SSG(P) Mick Sobczak Staff, don't just close the tab that's frozen. It requires closing Chrome down entirely (ie, all tabs, by hitting the 'x' on the top right. )

LTC Yinon Weiss - I sent Carlos screenshots of the other issues (the 'read more' links not showing) -- he should have them and be able to show you. I can't recreate them right now because it's not happening at the moment, although this is still a recurring issue for me.
The typing freeze happened when responding to anyone (such as I'm doing right now). You'd type merrily away, reach a particular character limit (it seemed to be the same each time, though there was no counter), and the page would freeze, necessitating one to close the tab (I thought, but was wrong), and reopen it, and start typing again. Only to forget, and hit it again. I eventually figured out that Chrome had to be shut down entirely to fix it. This particular problem hasn't happened for a couple of months, unlike the ones above.

SN Greg Wright - Ok, the issue with the 'read more' links has been identified and is in our queue to fix (hopefully in the next couple of weeks). The issue with the response typing may have been fixed already with other bugs, can't be sure. If you are ever able to replicate it, please let me or Carlos know, and we could then use your help to isolate the problem. It's super hard to fix something when we can't replicate it on this end. Thanks again for your help and patience.

SN Greg Wright there is a character limit on the "Home" page questions. As far as I know that limit does not apply to questions you post in the Topic groups or the basic groups of the pre-home-page questions.
