Anyone have experience with military lodging in New York City area? I'm looking to take my family on a trip before I mobilize. The Navy Lodge in Staten Island seems like the best value (take the free Staten Island ferry over to Manhattan) but I just wanted to see if anyone had a better suggestion.

I was stationed at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn last year and that was the best lodging for me, nice base, nice view, nice (newer) PX but a little bit more expensive then Staten Island. I stayed there as well it definitely cheaper. The weekend buffet at the Officers Club on Ft Hamilton is the best! 2 thumbs up for Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn.

Check out the Coast Guard Lodge in Fort Wadsworth, also on Staten Island. It is right under the Narrows Bridge.

CDR Getty, the soldiers, sailors, marines and airman club is a 100yo hostel in Midtown Manhattan a few blocks from Grand Central. I've stayed there twice while in NYC goofing off. The last time it was with my two children for a week exploring National Park/historical monuments (Teddy Roosevelt boyhood home, GEN Grants tomb). It is CHEEP and very spartan but REEKS OF MILITARY history. The place was established by Teddy R's widow and chaired by GoA Pershing. Again its spartan berthing. I plan on taking my 10yo back to NYC and we'll be staying there. Enjoy your time and best of luck doen range.

Thanks for the input! Don't know if I'd say it is cheap for a family; however, I'd agree that compared to most NYC rates it isn't bad. I'd pay $70, my wife would pay $70, and my kids would each be $15. $170 a night for inside Manhattan is very good. (But I think I'll stick with the $108 for the Navy Lodge on Staten Island and just lose the half hour on the ferry.)
