There seems to be a separation in our field on whether this is a good or bad move. I jumped on the opportunity for a couple of reasons, but one of the main reasons is because it is on our career map. What are your thoughts fellow career counselors? Will this help an individual make the next grade or hinder them?

It will be a different mindset out there for sure. Recruiting in my opinion is about the number as opposed to it being about the Soldier. As long as you are successful I don't think it will hinder anything quite honest, it may set you apart I think.

That was my thoughts, but it will be interesting to see what some of the senior folks in our career field think.

There are alot of seniors that have the SQI already and I'm sure they would have their own experience regarding that. I can see it helping us out immensly. Now being a 79S and going into the 79R world they may give you a little bit of a hard time lol.

Anything out there that challenges you to better yourself as an individual is a good thing. Most in our career field are afraid of change. I highly recommend everyone experience a few years out there doing either recruiting or drill. It will make you a better Soldier in the long run!

I'm retired MSG (P) Luis Figueroa , I Senior Career Counselor (1999). I must agree, taking on challenges is great for your career. I started in the Army in AIR DEF ARTILLERY 16P , then 71L and volunteered for Drill Sgt Duty as a E5 made E6 and back to back volunteered for Recruiting Duty as a E6 and got accepted even though at the time branch mgrs thought I was crazy insane. Highly successful in Recruiting utilizing my Drill Sgt experience getting newly signed young men and women ready for BT, I once again requested to become a Career Counselor and the Branch Mgr was super Great in assisting me in reclass to 79S. Yes I was A triple badger Drill, Recruiter and a Senior Career. These assignments were awesome taking care of soldiers.Yes the jobs felt with a huge amount pressure and stress-Keepng Senior Commanders Happy..Overall very satisfying. Made SGM list sequence # 2 but my retirement was approved and departed..I say look for the tough demanding assignments, they will definitely put you way ahead of your peers for being highly SUCCESSFUL. Army Strong.

Diversity is always a good thing with the understanding that infomation will be obsolete years after returning to the 79S field. In this fast pace Army Leaders are challenged with competitive promotions, evaluations, and assignments. If an individual's primary MOS is Retention and that job is vacated for three years then that individual must embrace catching up with the rest of the field to be relevant agsin.
