The Veterans Upward Bound program, which offers students from families with little or no history of higher education free pre-college classes and other services, “helped us build a bond between veterans and with our instructors,” Gaffri said. “They were a grounding factor for us, because they brought us back to the world of being a college student.”
The program, established in 1992, hosted an open house in Cisel Hall on Wednesday for the students it serves — about 150 statewide and 30-50 on the MSUB campus, said Lori Borth, the program’s director since August.

The Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program was initiated in the 1970s as part of the Upward Bound program, with the special mission of helping U.S. military veterans make the transition to postsecondary education. All projects must provide instruction in mathematics, laboratory science, composition, literature and foreign languages.

I had heard of Upward Bound over the years COL Mikel J. Burroughs but I had never heard of Veterans Upward Bound helping with smooth the transition from service to school. I did not realize that Montana has the only statewide Veterans Upward Bound program in the nation. Hopefully it is helping many veterans transition from military service to school and then to stable employment.
