I have pondered switching to Linux for years. My tech friends tell me it is the way to go. I think the only thing that has really kept me from switching is that I always thought that Linux was for those tech savvy guys...that is so not me, I am lucky to turn the computer on. It has never interested me in learning how to do all the stuff behind the screen so to speak.

Since it is open source, wouldn't I have to worry viruses and such?

SPC(P) Jay Heenan - Many argue that Open source means more susceptible to malware. However, the balance comes with the fact that more people can see and contribute to the code. Of the few studies I could find on the topic. Open source was no more susceptible to such problems than proprietary. If you have a security issue with an Open Source app, contact the dev team and it'll likely quickly become a priority.

SPC(P) Jay Heenan I highly recommend switching to Linux. It is one of the few things that I do not regret. I would suggest staying with either Ubuntu or Mint. They are designed to work out of the box similar to the way Windows is. Ubuntu forums also have answers and step-by-step guides to fix problems and give you more ideas and ways to use your computer.

PO3 Dale S. - SPC(P) Jay Heenan PO3 Dale hit the nail on the head. It is very easy to install and use Linux now. The best example I can give you, my Father who is 66 and just uses his computer for Facebook and e-mail, installed Linux on his computer by himself. He is so much happier now. "Less muss and fuss," he says.

This looks to be an interesting distro. I have to give them props for doing what no one else seems willing to do.

That is unless you are wanting to do any work on your computer that requires a common access card. Good luck using linux for DOD work.
