I'm so glad Gitmo wasn't shut down. There are some of the worlds worst detained at Gitmo, and had they been released, it definitely would come back to bite us. Obama's rush to close it, is something I have never understood why. As the years have passed since he wanted it closed, I now have an idea why, but I'm not going to go there.

Within days after taking office, Barack Obama pompously penned an executive order closing the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within a year. Seven years later, the facility remains open due to strenuous objections to moving Gitmo’s occupants stateside (or elsewhere) as well as concerns over the cost of closing the prison. A recent Defense Department proposal pegged the cost as $600 million, which includes separate holding facilities around the country for the remaining detainees.
Frustrated at the lack of progress, some in Obama’s camp want him to go the executive order route again and with a stroke of a pen magically make the holding cells disappear. In reality, though, Obama has stepped up the pace of releasing prisoners over the last several months with another five transferred to the United Arab Emirates this week. The current population of 107 may be in double-digits by year’s end if Obama has his way. Last month, Obama spokesman Josh Earnest intoned, “I’m not aware of any ongoing effort to devise a strategy using only the president’s executive authority to accomplish this goal. But I certainly wouldn’t … take that option off the table.”

Build the camp on Johnston Atoll. That's where they should have put in in the first place, out of sight out of mind.

We wouldn't need guards there. Someone would have to serve there to feed the rats. That's a great place for them SGT Francis Wright.

SGT Francis Wright That is an awesome idea. Build it, tear up the runway, build a pier, deliver everything (including the prisoners) by ship. Remove all clocks, calendars, and communications so that the prisoners have no way of telling passage of time. Feed them the same meal every meal at random times throughout the day. Let them feel as if they are truly marooned.

SGT Bodine, Do Not understand either.. Has Cuban Government Demanded it shut down ?? As an alternative are we to offer the prisoners the top floor at the Hilton ?? Are they considered POW's ?? Do other Nations want President Obama to release them ?? They have medical, food, water.. that is better than some of our civilians have !!

PO3 Michael James, I don't know if they are now considered prisoners. The politically correct term used to be detainees. IMO, if that place was to shut down, there would be total chaos in the world. There was talk of moving them to the U.S. They are some of the worst of the terrorists. And yes, they are being taken care of on our dime, but they need to stay there.

Yes, Cuba wants the entire base shutdown. They pretty much always have, regardless of the prison. They are not POWs.
