SSN No longer used on evaluations. How will the random DOD 9-digit number be assigned?

In my education about the revised NCOERs, I learned that SSNs will no longer be used or is optional. What I need clarification on is: do we leave the space blank?
I heard that there will be a random 9-digit number assigned to soldiers instead. Will this be auto-filled by the EES (Electronic Evaluation System)? If it is generated during our first evaluation under the new system, I assume that number will become a permanent identifier to be used again and again.
Will that number be used for other applications in place of the SSN, where appropriate?

No, the space is not left blank. You will input SSN number and select verify andit will then convert to the DOD number.

I would imagine that it might be something along the line of the DoD ID number that replaced SSN's on everyone's ID card (CAC ID).
