You are the senior NCO of your unit. It’s 2200 hrs, and
you’re in the motor pool doing a walk-through prior to tomorrow morning’s 100%
inventory inspections. Suddenly you notice that one of your vehicles is missing
its long whip antenna. “I know someone stole it,” you think to yourself. As
you walk back to your car, you see another unit’s vehicle parked in its spot,
and it has the same long whip antenna you’re missing. It’s not secured. No one
will see if you take it. What would you do?

I wouldn't steal anything, but I would:1. Report the loss to the Commander and XO as theft.2. Notify supply to adjust the shortage annex.3. Initiate a FLIPL.4. Request the missing part5. Speak with the sharing unit's CSM about the issue without passing blame.6. Secure all BII in a storage locker/container.This type of thing happens with drip pans and chock blocks all the time.

This is a fantastic response to the issue. I don't think I'd change a single point you made. I'd probably add that I would go to the platoon sergeant (since I am probably a 1SG in this scenario) and let him know what I found out while doing my own leader checks. I'm confident that he would then take the appropriate corrective actions.

Somebody must have cut the .032 lockwire securing the antenna. Thieves had to work for my gear!

Leaders who have the support of their team will always be able to accomplish more. #AskForbes Something I shared on twitter a long time ago but it's true.

Keep walking. If it has been accounted for on our property books up to...insert date and time...and it suddenly is missing then we have the inspection "as is". At least I can go to sleep at night knowing I set the right example for my troops by doing the RIGHT thing. My father taught me to always do the right thing even when it was the unpopular thing to do. Clear conscience. And definitely report it ASAP!
