NATO to hold emergency session over Russian jet shot down by Turkey

NATO is having a emergency session at the request of Turkey, to discuss Turkey shooting down a Russian jet. The purpose of the meeting is for Turkey to tell NATO about the shooting down of the Russian jet. Turkey asserts that the Russian jet violated Turkey air space while Russia claims this is false. Turkey is not a *founding* member of NATO but is a member of the member Alliance.
Turkey has been at odds with Russia over Russia supporting the Assad regime but had thus far not been at conflict with Russia over it.
This is a very serious event as a way needs to be found between the U.S., Russia, Turkey, France, (England now wants in too) to combat ISIS. I do not call this a way for to attain a coalition purposefully but rather a way to coordinate efforts.

I agree this is a very serious situation. Turkey claims the Russian jet violated Turkish airspace and Russia says it did not. This could rapidly escalate. I would not be surprised if Russia did not conduct a retaliatory air strike against Turkey or put more planes in the same area to entice a confrontation.

FYI this would not be much of a NATO Issue if Turkey was not a NATO member :-)
There is an incredibly remote possibility that a NATO nation shooting down a Russian jet would lead to war. Granted this is not 1914 and an archduke has not been assassinated.
Turkey has gone through political and religious changes since 1952. The nation became more hardline Islamic over the past 20 years.
My heart goes out to the family of the downed Russian plane pilot(s) because their loss will probably be ignored in all of the brouhaha which erupts from this incident.

LTC Stephen F.Sorry I should have said they are not a founding member. I did say they are a member of the member Alliance. In 1949, there were 12 founding members of the Alliance: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States. The other member countries are: Greece and Turkey (1952), Germany (1955), Spain (1982), the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland (1999), Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia (2004), and Albania and Croatia (2009).

CPT (Join to see) Best to have a coalition against ISIS/ISIL than argue about which Air Corridor should have been used. Turkey needs to figure out what they want, a fight with Russia should not be on this list. Let's hope that NATO can get Turkey to listen.

This principle is enshrined in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an attack on one Ally shall be considered an attack on all Allies.
NATO invoked Article 5 of the Washington Treaty for the first time in its history following the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States.
The principle of collective defense has also been raised in the context of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. Russia’s actions have raised justified concerns among its neighbors, including those who are NATO members. That is why NATO Foreign Ministers, on 1 April, directed Allied military authorities to develop extra measures to strengthen collective defense.

TSgt John Temblador, PI, CIPA No, a member state must request to invoke. I see France doing this from the Paris attacks. I don't see Turkey doing this, they are looking to send a message to maintain their territorial integrity against all.
Ukraine is not a NATO member, no one in NATO (other than the Baltic states) is willing to go to war over Ukraine. Ukraine has an agreement between Russia, USA and UK to maintain territorial integrity. This was signed when the Ukraine agreed to give up their Nukes. Sadly neither the US or UK are willing to live up to this mutual territorial obligation and Putin knows this.
