There are asshole's in every profession, and the military holds quite a few of em. I had my share of power tripping NCO's, but I drove on, and used it as a learning point, on how NOT to treat Soldiers. The military wasn't designed to be a "summer camp" type atmosphere, order and discipline are a must, and so goes corrective training, which some people view as "being abusive", when administered the correct way, the training value is high. If you ever feel "abused" in the military, you can always contact IG, with that being said, when you do call em, you better make sure you have a legitimate grievance, or they won't give you the time of day..

All the time, at the time. Was wrong most of the time, after the fact. Hindsight is an SOB.
There were a couple legitimate "this ain't right" cases as well as a few "pick your battle" cases, but overall my pluses were better than minuses.

SPC Margaret Higgins I said that kind of tongue in cheek, I should explain. First I loved my my time in the Navy, I would not trade that experience for anything. I had every intention of making it my career however fate and a medical problem prevented it.
When I saw I felt abused its is kind of the truth, however I do not think I am using the word in the same way that you did in your question. What I am talking about are months on end of little to no sleep. Constantly working to maintain a vessel that went into service just after WW2 that was doing a job its designers never predicted.
In many ways prisoners had it better than those that volunteered. At the time much of it was drudgery and very miserable however age and hindsight have shown me that it was not as bad as I thought it was then.
As a young man I was able to go places and see things that most people my age can only dream of. I found a bond with others that was forged in the times of shared misery. I miss the way of life, I would gladly trade a week of the time I have left for another day haze grey and underway.

Months on end of no sleep, or little sleep, would get to me as well. And I totally understand why you felt it was "abuse".
I am extremely glad that you found the absolute Positive, the Hope that you ultimately did.
