Major Findings from the FBI’s Active Shooter Incidents Study
The just-released “A Study of Active Shooter Incidents in the United States Between 2000 and 2013” contains a full list of the 160 incidents used in study, including those that occurred at Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook Elementary School, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Fort Hood, the Aurora (Colorado) Cinemark Century 16 movie theater, the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, and the Washington Navy Yard, as well as numerous other tragic shootings. Here are some of the study’s findings:
- Active shooter incidents are becoming more frequent—the first seven years of the study show an average of 6.4 incidents annually, while the last seven years show 16.4 incidents annually.
- These incidents resulted in a total of 1,043 casualties (486 killed, 557 wounded—excluding the shooters).
- All but six of the 160 incidents involved male shooters (and only two involved more than one shooter).
- More than half of the incidents—90 shootings—ended on the shooter’s initiative (i.e., suicide, fleeing), while 21 incidents ended after unarmed citizens successfully restrained the shooter.
- In 21 of the 45 incidents where law enforcement had to engage the shooter to end the threat, nine officers were killed and 28 were wounded.
- The largest percentage of incidents—45.6 percent—took place in a commercial environment (73 incidents), followed by 24.3 percent that took place in an educational environment (39 incidents). The remaining incidents occurred at the other location types specified in the study—open spaces, military and other government properties, residential properties, houses of worship, and health care facilities.

I'd like to point out that they specifically "juggle" terminology to inflate the issue. It's subtle and even I almost didn't catch it at first.

Mass Shooters means one thing. Active Shooters means another. There have been approximately 75~ "Mass Shootings" (in the way we think about them) in US Modern History.
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/mass-shootings-map

Active Shooters is a different term. It is defined by the DHS. It is as follows:

"An Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in
a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms(s) and there is no
pattern or method to their selection of victims. "
http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/active_shooter_booklet.pdf

This DOUBLES the number of incidents, and shifts things into the "Mass Shooting" Discussion which would not normally be. Think about it like the Assault Weapon, Assault Rifle debate. Similar terms used specifically to create confusion, to push an agenda.

Here's a good site, but it does a lot of the same thing, using gang violence (criminal activity) to inflate the numbers.

Maj Richard "Ernie" Rowlette Capt Richard I P. Can you gentlemen check my logic on this one.

Maj Richard "Ernie" Rowlette - "Mass Shooting" is 4 (or more) are shot within a singular "event" per ATF and hasn't changed for a while. "Mass Murder" is same thing but where 4 (or more) are killed.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS, Maj Richard "Ernie" Rowlette, "Unfortunately, it's the FBI"

Agreed. This administration has politicized every governmental institution under its control; IRS, FBI, EPA, Justice Dept., even the military.

Obama was telling the truth when he said he was going to "fundamentally transform" this nation. The government is no longer to be trusted, unfortunately.

I could have sworn that O'Bonzo said three days ago that there have been mass shootings EVERY DAY in the country, this year alone. I guess he was doing what he always does: lying.

It's how you "present the information."

http://www.shootingtracker.com/

Is likely what he was talking about. Now, when you look at all the "Unknowns" on the list, and actually follow the news stories, the issue becomes a little clearer. There's a lot of gang violence, which changes things.

When we are talking about "Mass Shootings" we envision these school shootings or "rampages." However, the classic gang related drive-by shooting where 4+ people are injured is also a mass shooting by the technical definition. But that has a different root cause.

As I mention in other threads, the "rampage" shooters are generally Mental Health or Ideological related, whereas Criminal related shootings just have different basis. In other words, most people are WAY oversimplifying the issue (I am as well, don't get me wrong).

The problem comes when they oversimplify and don't understand it though. Or oversimplify in an attempt to push a specific agenda.

I'd like to believe, I'm not doing that, but instead doing 101 level explanation.

Another study finds that when treated carefully the data doesn't show significant trends.

"No matter how you cut it, there's no epidemic...This report should calm the fears that many people have that these numbers are out of control."

And some more scholarly debate on the topic (same authors, just scholarly not bloggy).
Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS, FYI I'm running down some more info on the statistical modelling here, MTF.

Capt Richard I P. Thanks for the link. It was informative and helped me understand some of the terminology that's flying around. Of course, our President would have us believe that we are living in the absolute worst times for shootings in US history. I believe the truth is, much more so, that the News services in our country do tend to publicize this numbers to such a degree.

I sent an email to the author of the cited study ( the original post reference-co-authored with the FBI, not the one I posted) , will notify if I receive a response, if I get access to the data I'll run a regression or two and comment on it as well....again, MTF.
