From what I know they’ve never been under the DoD except during times of war. They were Dept of Transportation, and now they’re Homeland Security.

Will Boyd The Marine Corps is a branch of the military. It does however have close ties to the Navy, and the Department of the Navy oversees both service branches, each having its own autonomous leadership (Marine Corps has its Commandant, US Navy has its Chief of Naval Operations, both leaders are members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and both branches are under civilian oversight of the Secretary of the Navy.

It's not a troll question, it's a family member, probably very confused by the Navy/Corps relationship. The vast majority of Americans know nothing about the military. This wasn't an amused answer, it was rude, to a family member. Pretty messed up.
