Why don't Old Guard Soldiers wear sleeve rank, but only NCO's do?

No junior enlisted rank because we don't want to outrank the "unknowns". Also, since we don't know the name of the unknowns, no name tag. I was in the Old Guard 1975-1979.

LT Joseph Jones
SPC John Decker - It seems from the picture above, officers wear rank on their uniforms.

Danny is Partially correct but only NCOs and officers wear their rank on their ceremonial uniforms and no one wears a name tag on their ceremonial uniform. I was in The Old Guard at the same time as Danny was. I am not sure what company he was in but I was in Co. E (Honor Guard) and at that time we were the only ones who could wear the Honor Guard tab.

Because it's a pain in the ass to have to cut off and sew on rank all the time and it makes the wool uniforms look like shit. They get faded unevenly. You also can't have your uniforms at the seamstress for 2 weeks, the optempo is too high. That and it's fairly common for lower enlisted in TOG to swap blouses with the high optempo. Things happen. Takes a simple problem out of the equation.

I was always impressed with how much common sense TOG used. Example: we don't do traditional facing movements, i.e. "Draw the C" when doing an about face. It doesn't look uniform, it's hard to synchronize, and it doesn't look good. So it's a 3 count movement instead. Makes sense.

SSG Harper Peterson - It's not, though. Consider the OPTEMPO in TOG. You don't have time for your uniform to be in alterations to have rank sewn on. I went from E1 to E5 in the Old Guard in 24 months. If every Soldier in 3d US INF had their blues in alterrations every time they were promoted, half the teams would be NMC at any given time. Why do Tomb Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier not wear nameplates? | RallyPoint
I've always been intrigued at all of the small nuances of the ASU as well as anything to do with Drill and Cermony. These interests came together at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. However I noticed that Tomb Guards wear the uniform without a nameplate. I've scoured the internet to find an answer for this and have come up empty handed.

This thread applies to the Tomb Sentinels, but also the rest of TOG leaves off their nameplates too, so the "our name doesn't matter" doesn't necessarily apply. In TOG you actually have different uniforms. You have your "ceremonial" uniforms and your "personal" uniforms. Ceremonials don't have nameplate, has medals instead of ribbons, ceremonial belt, gloves. Personals are more like the traditional ASU's. It's really all about uniformity. You even have "ceremonial B's" which are normally worn for rehearsals and don't have the nameplate either. It's mostly for convenience and being able to get around 670-1 without unnecessary exceptions to policy.
