How can I verify if someone actually served in the military or if they are practicing stolen valor?

I know that you could ask the for a DD214 but this person is very confrontational and I don't feel like causing a scene so how can I verify their military service. I have legitimate reasons and/or suspicions that they may not have served even though they are claiming they did.

Unless you or someone else is being actually harmed, just let it go.

I ran across a guy who applied for membership at my VFW. He had a DD215 that showed, among other things, 2000 parachute jumps. Our commander asked me (I have a real DD215) and a Army Paratrooper ( with "only" 200 jumps) to help him talk to the guy. By the time we were done, nobody was yelling at the fool or anything, I actually just felt ill.

Very good advice. Isn’t there enough violence and hatred in this Country?

Look, I understand typos. I make a lot. But if you are going to go to the trouble of commenting solely for the sake of insulting me without ANY form of discussion - just nastiness with no content - you could at least make sure that the the 5 words you typed are accurate.
How ironic that you call me an imbecile and cannot even spell it right.

You could do a Freedom of Information Act request for his service. If you think they are benefiting from it then you should contact law enforcement. If they are just saying outlandish stories I would just let them think they are cool. If it goes to the point about wartime service then I start to ask questions wrong on process. Like if he was in the 101st Air Assault at Fort Bragg. If he said yes then I start to call them out.

SPC Mark Lawrence - I have to say I believe you. As a woman veteran I constantly have to deal with being treated like I'm not a real veteran. I've been trying to get a hernia repair and the surgeon refused, seems I'm too fat with only 6 pounds to get rid of. I asked for a second opinion and the second surgeon denied me too. Meanwhile I suffer with bad reflux and burning all the way down my esophagus. I blatantly told the second surgeon that if I were a male veteran who is overweight he'd do the surgery without telling me I'm too fat. He claimed he didn't know where that was coming from so I told him, the VA is a good old boys network, always was and still is. he did nothing to instill in me any confidence that VA surgeons are completent and capable of doing surgeries because he was going to refer me to another VA for a third opinion from doctors who are better able to do the surgery and might do it even though I'm still too fat.

I wish you the best of luck. I was told I could get my knees replaced but since I was only 10%, I would be placed at the bottom of the waiting list, and it could take years for them to get to me. Gives me no confidence to trust them to cut on me.

13 years and I finally got 100%, permanent, DAV and VA found out I could be a wonderful friend and a real pain, and have nothing but time on my hands!

Sgt Melinda Pamphrey - Get a real doctor to help you. Those doctors are in school doing their residency. They practice on Vets like lab rats.
