If I remember properly, England had a chain of radars on the East coast. The Germans used rockets for strategic bombing which resulted in random effects. The English used traditional bombers on German cities which horrified English civilians as they learned that people on the ground could not outrace the intense heat, were often melted on the spot, and suffocated due to lack of oxygen.

Radar played a major role. The Buzz Bombs (V1) and the V2 Rockets were much like mortars. Area weapons, although they could be directed reasonably well to saturate an area and the Germans were able to build and launch quite a few. And a lot of credit has to go to RAF commanders who developed and employed some brilliant tactics.
