They're not even a step-family. They were just some people who he stayed with his senior year of high school.

He thought he had been adopted though. They told him that because he was 18 they couldn't adopt him but a conservatorship was the "same thing" as an adoption. It's not.

Also he's said for years that the way he's portrayed in the movie is a lie. He was an All American athlete when they met him. He played in 3 sports actually. They didn't teach him to play football. He wasn't illiterate.
