Our military reflects the community from which we recruit them, and are just as susceptible to trends in the civilian community as other people. During two years in the early 70s, I was the adjutant and drug and alcohol abuse officer for a 16 squadron air group. We were cleaning up a Corps suffering from the distractions of the war and its associated rapid expansion during the war. With the increased emphasis on our anti-drug programs the decrease in use was dramatic. As the adjutant, I was responsible for processing discharge packages for those whose performance and attitudes made them poor prospects for rehab, and processed between 50 and 100 people per month. Positive results on urinalysis tests soon dropped as well as other incidents. The potential consequences of aviation personnel using while working was emphasized. I suppose what I'm saying is that with states and even the House legalizing or talking about legalizing many types of drugs, the problem will continue, but there are ways of handling the problem. Unfortunately, they are time consuming, but the problems associated with use in flight organizations are not acceptable and the legal and administrative measures to handle the problem will follow those young people the rest of their lives. One only needs to read the posts on this and other military oriented sites where people released years ago under less than honorable circumstances talk of their attempts to change their records to recognize the problem.
At the same time you will hear different sources saying such drugs can be used responsibly and should be condoned. To those I say, do you want the person fighting on your right side to be under the influence in a fire fight, or would you like the person who tightened the Jesus nut or last worked on the flight controls of the aircraft you are riding in, or flying, to be less than 100% when he was working.
