Ensign Gay had a ring-side seat to witness the sinking of three Japanese carriers as he floated in the ocean after being shot down. He was amazingly fortunate to survive the attack, in which three American torpedo bombing squadrons attacked the Japanese carriers without fighter support or diversion from American dive bombers. Without a coordinated attack, he and his squadron mates had virtually no chance against the Zero fighters flying combat air patrol over the Japanese carriers.

He watched much of the battle floating by himself. It's really sad that his whole Squadron was wasted and not one hit was scored on the Japanese
