CINC Home has never been to NYC and wants to see the Statue of Liberty and the Big Apple but with reports of increased crime we are hesitant to go. If we do we will be staying away from the city and going in for a day only.

Dale...I took my family years ago on Thanksgiving to see the Macy's parade...it ws awesome. Here are a few tips.
1.) On Long Island there is a Coast Guard Station. They have Billeting rooms at a pretty good rate and a small Bx.
2.) You take your care to the Long Island Ferry and pay probably $10 a day to park there, get on the free ferry and it puts you out at Lower Manhattan at the Metro Station.
3.) A couple of blocks from there is the 9-11 memorial and the Fire Station that first Responded. ight around the corner is a little Pizza kitchen where you can get a little slice of heaven on earth...NY Style Pizza!
4.) Around the corner not too far away is the place where you can buy tickets to go out to Ellis Island and the Statue Of Liberty...as a veteran/retiree you get a cut rate and sometimes they will let you skip the line to get on the boat.
5.) If you choose to go downtown to times square/central park etc, if you show your retiree ID at the ticket counter and sometimes you can get a metro pass for free...mapping is easy and you can get around NY no problem. There is also a USO at Grand Central Station where you can buy discount tickets to broadway shows.
We never felt in danger. Cops everywhere and people were friendly. At theend of the day we would catch the ferry back to Long Island, get in our car and go back to the billeting. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
