Obviously the United Press International is lying because Mr. Trump would NEVER actually back such a socialist idea as forcing businesses to pay their workers a living wage. Why, it's obvious that if the workers don't think that they are being paid enough then they can walk right out and get another job that pays LOTS more (they can't "walk out and strike because that is communist) and the only reason why they are so-called "stuck" in so-called "low wage" jobs is because they are too lazy and socialist to even consider actually working harder and/or taking responsibility for themselves rather than sucking at the state's teat.\\
Right?

There is no single idea more stupid than the one that proposes to raise people from poverty by raising the minimum wage. Even that progressive icon, Governor Jerry Brown, admitted that raising California's minimum wage wasn't going to result in any good as he signed the bill raising it. Progressives have long preached economics as akin to a pie which should be divided equally among all people. That a larger slice of the wealth for one was achieved only by stealing from another. Yet anyone who takes a moment to think about it knows that wealth is not a finite value. Wealth is created through work and investment. Those who work more and invest more wisely receive more. Taking from those who earn more wealth to give to others who don't is simply theft. In the case of redistribution of wealth through tax, it is armed robbery committed by the government.
Now, in every jurisdiction where the minimum wage has been raised precipitously, jobs have been lost, automation has replaced manual labor, and the plight of low income workers has been made worse.
Why would Donald Trump sign onto this craziness? Well, he has become a politician, a liberal politician, trying to out-Democrat the Democrats. That has been the strategy of the GOP in recent decades and where did it get them? Not far...

CPT Jack Durish - Captain; With the proviso that "the effect of raising people from poverty" is very dependent on the percentage of people who are actually earning the the minimum wage, I agree that "There is no single idea more stupid than the one that proposes to raise people from poverty by raising the minimum wage."
Where the percentage is low, then the effect CAN be high (due to the fact that the overall economy can absorb the change) BUT where the percentage is high, then the effect is likely to be low since the economic impact is likely to be inflationary.
Where I live the Provincial government has announced that the Provincial minimum wage (this differs from [for example] a [some?] "State Minimum Wage" in that it applies to ALL employment within the government's jurisdiction and NOT to just "State Employees' wages) will rise from CDN$10.45 (US$8.13) to CDN$10.85 (US$8.45) [NOTE - The currency conversion isn't all that useful since the "Canadian shelf prices" (denominated in CDN$) are generally VERY similar to the "American shelf prices" (denominated in US$)] The NET effect on the Provincial economy is expected to be (at worst) nil and, since the "leftist" Liberal government also reduced the "Small Business Tax Rate" Applicable to 100% of all "Small Businesses) by 60% (effective at the same time that the Provincial Minimum Wage Rate increases (an increase applicable to approximately 5.4% of all workers) by 3.827%. This exchange is (roughly) 144.7342% favorable to the small businesses as it INCREASES cost by only 0.206658% while DECREASING expenses by considerably more than that.

Capt (Join to see) - Captain; The minimum wage has NOT been "static" over the years. From its 1939 (actual $0.25 per hour) $3.45 in terms of 2014 dollars to its 2014 (actual $7.25 per hour) $7.25 in terms of 2014 dollars the minimum wage has shown a steady progress in terms of "constant dollars".
HOWEVER, the federal minimum wage PEAKED in 1968 at (actual $1.60 per hour) $8.15 in terms of 2014 dollars and has shown a steady DECLINING trend in its purchasing power since then.

I will agree on most of your post. There are people working hard at part time/low paying jobs because these are the only jobs out there right now. Minimum wage is definitely not a living wage. It is meant for teens and college kids to get beer money. These jobs teach personal responsability, if you can't show up on time, or don't perform, why would anyone pay more? Minimum wage is the amount of money that is agreed on between you and a perspective employer.
