Did you have a swimming hole in your childhood? I did. Beaver Dam and Beaver Springs were located not far from my home of record in Cockeysville, Maryland, north of Baltimore. Both were quarries that flooded when the miners accidentally tapped into ground water. Honestly, I have no clue as to what they were quarrying or how "beavers" were involved. Both were bottomless pits with sheer sides (you had no fear of hitting your head when you dove in). Divers told us that there was quarrying equipment at the bottom (steam shovels, etc) and one of my acquaintances drowned there while practicing SCUBA diving

I believe that there was a distillery in Cockeysville in the 1970s that made "Fighting Cock Bourbon"...it had a powerful punch to it: 120 proof (or higher} if I remember correctly. The Baltimore area "City-Poly" games were fiercely contested; a state-wide interest was shown in those football clashes - riots at times after several of the games.

So, I looked up the history of my old swimming hole and discovered that it had a History. Marble quarried there was used in the construction of the Washington Memorials in both Baltimore and Washington DC
