TONIGHT's Topic: "Out Of The Frying-Pan - Into The Fire"
Daniel - Series-Preview
We are going to take a journey into the book of Daniel and look at the historical accounts in the first six chapters. Some of these stories may be familiar to those of you who went to Sunday School and/or Vacation Bible School when you were kids.
Our themes will be:
"Out Of The Frying-Pan - Into The Fire" - Daniel 1-3
"I Hope You're Hungry" - Daniel 4
"Handwriting On The Wall" - Daniel 5
"They Look Hungry" - Daniel 6
We will notice some common-themes throughout this entire series; the faithfulness to God of Daniel and his friends, the self-centeredness and corruption of the kings they served, and God's faithfulness to His servants.
Out Of The Frying-Pan - Into The Fire
We are going to go back over 2,500 years to the time of Daniel in the Old Testament for the next few weeks. The Jews had been united during the reigns of David and Solomon, but after Solomon's death, the kingdom split into two parts; the Northern Kingdom, with its capital at Samaria, known as Israel, and the Southern Kingdom, with its capital at Jerusalem, known as Judah. Because of their apostasy and idolatry, God sent judgment on the Judah at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.
Besides ransacking the Temple, the Babylonians had taken several of the "choice young men" captive to serve in the kingdom of Babylon, which sets the stage for the stories to follow. We meet four of these young men in Daniel 1:6. They are Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego may be more familiar names for the latter three. As we can well imagine, there was a huge clash between the culture they were familiar with and the culture they were thrust into, because they worshipped the true God, while the Babylonians were polytheistic-idolaters.
We, too, are strangers in an alien-land, because, after we have served our country, we no longer "fit-in" to our culture and society. We, too, may be tempted to forsake our morals, ethics and values so that we "fit-in" with our culture, but that would be a dangerous mistake. We may not face the kinds of dire-consequences Daniel and his friends faced, but that doesn't mean that there won't be any "serious" consequences for our actions, or inactions, which may including losing your job, or worse.
There is no "wrong" time to do the RIGHT thing.
