Used to have an original cavalry carbine of this weapon. Used it to ride (and die) with a Custer reenactment group for two years. I thought it a great weapon. Using a 'prairie belt' for cartridges you could put out a good volume of accurate fire loading and firing like I used to do rapid fire with an M-79.

Great military weapon, right up there with the bolt action rifles.

One overlooked weapon was the Springfield model 1866. Immediately following the Civil War The Army converted about 35,000 model 1863 Springfield muzzle loaders to .50 Cal Breech loaders that used metallic cartridges. It was issued to the Army in 1867 and used in several skirmishes and battles with the natives.
