I'm glad the base will remain. At least for now. However, it says that "Providing credible deterrence for NATO" will continue at Spang. I guess I'd have to ask how you do that without aircraft...

Thank you my friend Maj Robert Thornton for making us aware that Spangdahlem Air Base located in near Spangdahlem, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany "is not projected to close. Elements of the base will be relocating, but the base itself will remain,” base officials said in response to concerns about the future of the installation."
1. The 480th Fighter Squadron [F-16] and other parts of the 52nd Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem would move to Italy including the "52nd Civil Engineer Squadron also would be among the first to go to Italy at a time to be determined, indicating that units not directly flying and maintaining the F-16s will also leave the base."

2. Outside of the 52nd Fighter Wing’s main F-16 mission, the wing’s other missions include:
a. Providing credible deterrence for NATO
b. Joint reception, staging, onward movement, and integration
c. Facilitating inter-theater airlift
d. Building partnership capacity

I hope to travel to German with my darling wife in a year t=or two and take river cruises.
