(07 2021) 98-year-old WWII veteran Pete DuPré played the national anthem on a harmonica in a stirring rendition which received many cheers from the audience before the USWNT's pre-Olympic sendoff game while several women on the US soccer team turned away from the US flag as the veteran played.
The US Women’s soccer team was playing against Mexico in East Hartford, Connecticut in the match before heading to Japan. Some of the players will be remembered as those who showed hatred, or at the least, disrespect for the very country that enabled them to be in their positions.

Yeah, thats not what happened at all. They didn't show hate for the country. My guess is that if one believes this, they didn't watch the game. This is exactly why I don't read things and form opinions from Gateway Pundit.

SSG Carlos Madden - And my point is 2 US athletes in the past were asked to leave the Olympics and they too were not being disrespectful.
1) The Olympics are not, and have never been, about politics. In fact it has the opposite ideals.
2) Team USA is representing us AS A WHOLE - with no political agenda and an agreement to abide by the Olympic values and rules.
At least it used to be that way.

SSgt (Join to see) - I think we agree there. But in this case these USWNT members were not making a political statement. They were facing the flag while the others faced the veteran. It feels more like the team managers didn't put out the info that "we're all going to face the flag" or "we're all going to face the veteran playing the national anthem."

SSG Carlos Madden - Yea - we are mostly in agreement. Is flag respect no longer taught? My youngest is almost 30 and he knows it. National anthem plays = take off your hat, face the flag, right hand over your heart. Taught in 1st grade and reinforced all through the 12 years of schooling.
IMHO: You have to know what is expected at this level of play. There should be no excuses by now.

If the Olympic Council will ban 2 black athletes for raising a fist on the podium, what is the difference here? This is the ONLY sporting event where you are part of **Team USA**. Talk about sowing division!
