Lt Col Charlie Brown, if the conditions in the photos on Army Times are any indication; overcast (normal for Lithuania), no or little rain (vehicles, roadway and vegetation all appear to be dry), and if the photo fits the time shortly after the accident (article does not say day or night), then it could have been attributed to one or all of these:
• Driver error of one of lead vehicles.
• Excessive rate of speed during the march.
• Extended periods of lack of sleep.
• Natural causes (animals, fallen vegetation, etc).
• The Good Idea Fairy (always a suspect).
• Sudden and catastrophic failure of vehicle.
Usually, mast of these type accidents are caused by the above situations.

Thank you SGT Michael Thorin for the list. As a Transportation Squadron CC, I've seen all but the Good Idea Fairy on the Accident Forms and/or Report of Survey. We did have
-admiring the scenery
-Confusing the brake and the gas pedals
-Forgot how to drive/steer
-Fell asleep
