Was wondering if the Canary Island are a series of hotspot volcanos, like the Hawaiian chain - and found this interesting article. It may be boringly technical, but the graphics are good and it does say:
"A wealth of geological data made available in recent years has led to the conclusion that the Canaries, like the Hawaiian archipelago, show submarine stages, followed by shield-building, declining, erosive and rejuvenation stages (Walker, 1990)."

The Canary islands are generally assumed to result from a plume but alternative theories have been suggested
