The eruption is said to be the type that will NOT cause a part of the island to drop into the sea and create an Atlantic Ocean Tsunami. Even so, it looks quite destructive.
"A recent burst of seismic activity on the volcanic island of La Palma, part of Spain’s Canary Islands, prompted authorities to evacuate about 5,000 residents. On Sunday, the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted near the town of El Paso, spewing ash and jets of lava into the air and triggering lava flows that have destroyed more than 100 homes so far. Lava continued to flow slowly on Monday, with no injuries or deaths reported."

Was wondering if the Canary Island are a series of hotspot volcanos, like the Hawaiian chain - and found this interesting article. It may be boringly technical, but the graphics are good and it does say:
"A wealth of geological data made available in recent years has led to the conclusion that the Canaries, like the Hawaiian archipelago, show submarine stages, followed by shield-building, declining, erosive and rejuvenation stages (Walker, 1990)."

The Canary islands are generally assumed to result from a plume but alternative theories have been suggested
