After reading the article, I was wondering where the cheapest/most expensive COFFEE (instead of froo-froo cappuccino) is, so I went hunting. Found a nice rundown from Vividmaps.com* called the U.S. Coffee Index*. Methodology seemed sound (menu prices of >10k coffee shops across 2500 cities) so I went with that (only drawback is it's from 2021, not last year).
Key Findings
o California is the state with the most coffee shops – 9,615
o The state with the highest number of coffee shops per 100,000 people in Hawaii – 41
o Harrisburg (PA) is the American city with the cheapest coffee – $1.18 per cup.
o Seattle (WA) is the city with the most expensive coffee – $3.92
o The most affordable coffee is on the East Coast or in the Midwest – New Jersey, Iowa, and Rhode Island are where the average price of coffee is 7% of the hourly pay.
Looking at the charts, the least affordable coffee is in Albany, NY (20.2% of median hourly pay) followed by Shreveport, LA (19.1%); Lafayette, LA (19.1%); Brownsville, TX (19%); and then McAllen, TX (18.6%). The most affordable goes to Oakland, CA (4.6%); Nashua, NH (5.2%); Newark, NJ (5.8%); Harrisburg, PA (5.8%); and then Ann Arbor, MI (5.9%)
