An extension of the Pentagon's National Military Command Center (NMCC), the national/homeland security role of the command post (CP) is to—ALERT, DIRECT and REPORT. Considered the "nerve center" or "eyes and ears of the commander," the CP is the commander's focal point for mission command (MC) and command and control (C2) communications management of assigned forces during normal day-to-day activities and contingencies or wartime operations.
Command post controller roles and responsibilities tend to vary based on the unit's mission, the MAJCOM the unit is assigned to, and resources assigned to the unit. Regardless of mission variances, what is foundational to each CP controller are mission command (MC) and command and control (C2) data processing and communication functions with the aerospace business domain.
Speaking of aerospace business domain, aerospace engineer and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-architect Wernher Von Braun had considerable correspondence with aerospace industry leaders, including Northrop Corporation, Aerojet General Corporation, Lockheed, General Dynamics, General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Sperry-Rand, Douglas Aircraft, International Business Machines (IBM) and General Electric (GE). The bulk of the letters and memoranda, however are from NASA headquarters in Washington and from Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama.
