Technology can be a good thing. To much technology can lead to catastrophic tragedy as evidenced by these two incidents. I don't know much about steering a large ship but I know from my own small bass boat, you can feel changes in speed, direction, and change in currents just by placing your hand on the throttle and steering wheel.

"Newer" isn't always "better". Sometimes things are done the way they are because that is the safest and most reliable method of accomplishing the task.

I was amazed when I learned that some department in the Navy decided to build a computer program to replace a the physical helm of the destroyers. The whole ship must conform to this computer game helm! No Glitches Here! NOPE YOU GUYS CAN LEARN IT OJT.

This Commanding Officer was almost completely roasted.

Having been a e2 on the Helm of a ship I can say that alone this never needed to be a computer program to make a adjustments to your direction. You can feel the ocean pull and tug on the helm. I do not know how you can feel this on a computer program. It is so iffy it is amazing that they actually outfitted a ship to be force fed a radical change, as if the old one did not work for the history of the Navy, this very critical piece of gear “THE HELM”

It seems computer technology is looking for a place to get a product.

I see fishing boats have digital helms

I go back to the Preamble and Declaration of Independence to see how and why this happened.
