It is well documented that Fetterman bragged "give me 80 men and I will ride through the entire Sioux nation." He had those 80 men. Disaster. He also disobeyed the order to only go to the ridge above the fort. He went over the ridge. Disaster.
As I've mentioned before, it is ironic that in those days if the Army won, it was a "great battle" but if the Indians won, it was always a "massacre."

I’m having a difficult time feeling pleased by this massacre, even though having Cherokee in my lineage. These soldiers were just like our servicemembers today following orders. If you want to criticize anyone, blame their military leadership.

I've been to several battle sites on the plains. Oddly, I always seem to be rooting for the Indians, guess it's that "fighting desperately for your people's lives against overwhelming odds" thing.

They had every right to fight to fight. They were often treated worse than dogs. Their land was taken away and much of the buffalos were killef.

It is what has happened over and over to those with lesser technology ever since 75,000 BC as we were shoving the Neanderthals out of their territories all across Eurasia, and happened again in the Americas. They fought well, they were overwhelmed, they intermarried with their conquerors. It happens continually through history.
