I watched it happen. We lived in Hillsboro, Oregon, which is about 100 miles from the mountain. I was playing outside and saw the mushroom cloud go up. It being the height of the cold war, I thought the Russians had attacked us (I was 12 at the time) and I ran inside yelling to my mom that we'd been nuked.

CWO3 Dennis M. - I was lucky flying into Seattle Tacoma Airport last month seeing in October the snow capped mountains of Mount Saint Helens, Mount Rainier and I don't know what the other Mountain was. You can see how the one side of Mount Saint Helens is blown away and that half of its cone is gone

SGT Mary G. - Got Short Changed on My Flight Out there 3 Weeks ago. Either Dark or No Window seat to admire the View. I Do Love My Trips out that way. Seeing 3 Sisters, Hood, Mt St Helens, Rainier from the Air is Beautiful.

My unit does internal joint planning for different COCOMS. We did a planning effort for USNORTHCOM for the CSZ event a few years ago. Yeah if the worst case scenario occurs it will not be pretty that's for sure.
