Navy considers keeping its ships in commission longer to accelerate goal of meeting larger fleet goal. Cost will be higher maintenance costs during the extended services lives of these ships. At #SALRadio we encouraged keeping the Perry class on line as gun platforms to fight pirates and smugglers instead of using Arleigh Burkes. Seems every new ship Navy puts on line costs three times that of ship it replaces.

As long as caution is used when mission assignment takes place, good idea. Good opportunity to ensure sailors get basic seamanship and other combat training in preparation for new ships as our fleet expands.
