I think it would be wise to save judgement for the rest of the story. Was their name listed as a known alias? Was the company that issued the check connected to something? Not saying the Police did the right thing, but we only have the words of the family and not the bank or the Police.

I'm assuming there is. The report link above is very poorly written, as there was no mention of even an attempt to get the Bank or Police statements. Not a good sign for the aspiring "journalists" from Wichita State University. If this is what we have to expect from our future journalists, we're in trouble. Again, folks here might want to reserve judgement until after they read all sides of the story.

First there is a lot more to this story than what has been publicly released.
Second, though it was a check, it is still considered a cash transaction, and there are laws and procedures in place for transactions over $10,000.
Third, the first sign of a problem was the ACH routing number on the check did not match the bank address on the check. Plus there was one other oddity about the check. (Watch a couple of the news videos to figure it out for yourself.)
Fourth, for such a transaction to even start today it takes over an hour, just in filling out the paperwork involved. It takes even longer when doing this at a credit union.
Fifth, some of you think you have a clue, but you still do not know the half of it.
