When I learned to sail a 17-foot boat a few years ago I met a competitive, blind sailor and asked him how he was able to walk around a boat that he can't see without falling overboard. I asked because I have a hard time judging distance, especially when the boat is moving. That means when I go to put my foot down, the deck seems closer to me than it is or the boat's edge might seem further away and I sometimes step off into nothing but air. The blind sailor told me not to shift my weight to the other foot until I was sure that I felt the ground or boat beneath me--problem solved. I also stopped falling off the curb and into traffic. You can learn a lot when you are open to learning. Thanks for sharing this article.
