Most Americans Remember December 7th, 1941 and Pearl Harbor.
Canadians, on the other hand, remember December 6th, 1917 when one of the largest conventional explosions occurred after the collision of two ships in the harbor. One of the ships was carrying High explosives. That ship became a weapon of mass destruction. It leveled Halifax Harbor sinking many ships and destroying or severely damaging the surrounding buildings.
After the explosion, you could see a huge cumulus-like cloud that looks like something from a volcanic eruption like Mount St Helens or Krakatoa.
About two thousand people were killed, about 9,000 were injured. The United States sent a train of Red Cross volunteers and supplies to Nova Scotia.

Every Year Halifax, Nova Scotia sends a massive Christmas tree to Boston, Massachusetts to thank them for the response from Boston traveling to Halifax after that explosion to help People there. The largest amount of aid came from Boston and too this day their is an annual lighting of that tree sent down from Nova Scotia Canada to Boston to thank them. Shown in the picture here is the lighting of that tree in Boston from Canada on December 1st, 2022

That is an awesome fun fact. The US and Canadian Red Cross organizations learned to coordinate after this disaster.

I remember reading about this quite a number of years ago. It's bizarre to read about how much of the town was involved in the explosion.
