In Nov 2018 the citizens of Florida elected Senator Ron DeSantis (R-FL) as their new Governor and he took office in Jan 2019. He has been busy following his campaign agenda with positive action on many issues. Today he issued, with regard to school safety, 2 executive orders. The first one deals with investigating an Obama era National School Program called "Promise", which allowed School Districts to reduce the amount of formerly reportable school violence or school criminal incidents by students, by mislabeling the incidents and allowing those students to enter the Promise (diversion) program, which had the intended effect of reducing school crime rate percentages. The Parkland High School shooter was allegedly a participant in this program right up until he killed 17 students in the HS; an unintentional but misguided consequence. The Program will be investigated to see if there are remaining program participators who require a second look via Threat Assessment systems already in place, and may result in the Promise Program being eliminated in Florida.
The 2nd Order is regarding the Guardian Program which appropriated funding to harden Florida Schools, and the $50 million dollars that was "left on the table" by certain Schools and School Districts failing to comply with the law to utilize the funds and upgrade systems currently in place. Gov. DeSantis' aim is for School Safety uniformity throughout Florida, and to force certain Schools and Districts to comply with current law.
A 3rd Executive Order with respect to School Safety is expected sometime later this afternoon. I must admit, Gov. DeSantis is making a positive impact for Florida in his short time as Governor so far.
