Linux very good for servers hosting workloads in a cloud / datacenter. Not so good for typically consumer on a desktop.

SSgt Mark Lines - I'm an EVGA/nVidia/ guy all the way for mobo and video. Power, case, and memory, Corsair. Like I said, though, the benefits of Steam OS (streaming games and stuff to your tv) is easily outdone simply by HDMI'n your computer to your tv. SteamOS will never have anything on a full desktop PC.

I agree to an extent. While Linux is getting better at UX Design and accessibility. For the last 30 years Microsoft has consistently dominated the business side of things. Meaning tools, and products were made specifically for it. With traction of other os's the reach for ubiquity has become mainstream forcing the change in all the environments to run a bit of everything. Ubuntu is now just as good as windows or OS X as far as is features, but the tools will still be dominant in the native windows space for the time being.

SGT (Join to see) - The trend missing in this thread is Software as a Service; or in this case OS as a Service. Microsoft has moved Office 365 from something you buy to something you lease that gets continually updated from the cloud on about a weekly basis. It runs on any OS or device and is highly successful growing very fast globally in the business and retail consumer market. It provides a consistent experience across all devices and OS. In this sense the OS itself is becoming much less important.
Likewise, the OS is moving to a cloud based model. Windows 10 is leased and continually updated on almost a weekly basis too. This is an industry trend. Google Chromebook OS only works if there is good broadband connectivity to the Google cloud. One difference is Win10 and O365 work when disconnected, like when in an Airplane, or when connected.
When a company is supporting hundreds of millions of users/ subscribers in a 130 countries and almost as many languages its gets a clear understanding about how much tinkering users want to do. 90% want everything to just work on the desktop or mobile device. While Android comes close in that regard, Linux does not in the mass market.
