A major low point in the war for the Allies. Also, the start of many jokes about the courage of the French.

As well as incompetence. France had more than enough toys to beat Germany. Even accounting for their obsession with the Maginot Line, they still could have given Hitler Western Front flash backs that he wouldn’t want.
