Joseph Kennedy (brother of John F. Kennedy) was killed on one of these missions. As a PB4Y pilot (Navy B-24 patrol plane), he volunteered to take off a radio-controlled B-24, arm the explosives, and bail out. On the Navy’s first attempt, with Kennedy aboard, the plane exploded prematurely.

Joe Kennedy was the most famous loss/casualty to Operation Aphrodite.
“Joe Jr. volunteered to fly in Project Anvil, the navy counterpart of Aphrodite. His plane was a PB4Y-1 (Navy version of the B-24 Liberator).”
