All calibers' performances are reduced by short barrels, which is why Hornady makes two different 9mm defense rounds, Critical Defense for compact and sub-compact pistols, and Critical Duty for full-size pistols. Short barrels don't allow all the powder to burn completely before the bullet is expelled out the muzzle, reducing ballistic performance.
