Physicians cannot allow misinformation and denigration of science to interfere with healthcare workers' efforts to treat patients affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, American Medical Association (AMA) President Susan Bailey, MD, said Friday evening at the opening session of the AMA Special Meeting of its House of Delegates.
"Never again can we allow the politics of division to undermine our ability to deliver the very best care to our patients," Bailey said during the virtual meeting, which is being held in lieu of the AMA's interim meeting. "Never again can we allow anti-science bias and rhetoric to undermine our public health institutions and discredit the work of physicians, scientists and researchers."

I have never seen patients in need of emergency care be turned away for a lack of insurance. Non urgent is different

Public and private hospitals alike are prohibited by law from denying patient care in an emergency. The Emergency Medical and Treatment Labor Act (EMTLA) passed by Congress in 1986 explicitly forbids the denial of care to indigent or uninsured patients based on a lack of ability to pay. It also prohibits unnecessary transfers while care is being administered and prohibits the suspension of care once it is initiated, provisions that prevent dumping patients who cannot pay on other hospitals. The treatment of indigent and uninsured patients is a huge financial drain upon the health system, especially in areas where no public hospitals are available.

I was struck be her comments about affordable care. I my opinion, if one cannot afford healthcare, it is nearly certain he/she will not seek care. I think that could produce spreaders. Thanks for the article, Robert.
