15" I was working in a TV shop at 13 and one of our suppliers also did industrial supply so I could get anything I could afford/. My first trip out of town after I got my license was to the two wholesalers and a huge surplus store in 1970.
I was buying surplus from Radio Shack by mail, and other items from Allied & Lafayette.
I still have my Weller 8200 soldering gum that I bought from Allied at 13. I was tired of the overpriced, Japanese irons that were all I could find in stores. They lasted a month or two, and two cost as much as the Weller..
It was a great time to learn Electronics.
