"A National Guard article on his unit’s deployment states that it received alert orders to deploy to Iraq in July 2005, two months after Walz retired. The unit first mobilized in the fall of 2005 to Camp Shelby Mississippi to prepare for deployment, according to the unit’s history, and then deployed in March 2006 for 22 months, which the Guard said was the longest continuous deployment of any military unit during US operations in Iraq."
"Walz reached the rank of command master sergeant, but he officially retired as a master sergeant— one rank below command sergeant major — because “he did not complete additional coursework at the US Army Sergeants Major Academy,” according to the Guard.
Joseph Eustice, a 32-year veteran who led the same battalion as Walz, told the Star Tribune in 2022 that Walz did nothing wrong when he left the Guard.
”He was a great soldier,” Eustice said. “When he chose to leave, he had every right to leave.”"

The only thing Walz needs to change is his bio if it says "CSM (R)." But he did serve and reach the rank of CSM - he just didn't do what he needed before retiring to retain the rank for pay benefits in retirement. The NG has said he has every right to say he reached the rank of CSM.
Also he retired 2 months before they go mobilization orders. I'm sure it's similar for the Guard as active you have to file retirement paperwork at least 9 months out. So when he filed his unit had no orders to deploy. And they didn't mobilize until after he retired when they got orders to do so. So he didn't abandon anything.
Everyone is basing things off the opinion of two crusty ass CSMs who seem to have some weird animosity to him for probably personal reasons.
Also notice how not once does Walz disparage Vance's service - the mediocre Marine who did no more, no less than asked of him for 4 years as public affairs...and then bone spurs Trump who never served and admitted to using his daddy's wealth and privilege to get out of it. Who has relentlessly mocked veterans. The list goes on.
