In Pakistan, the talaq procedure is governed by Islamic law and the Family Laws Ordinance of 1961. The process begins when a husband initiates talaq by pronouncing it three times over a period of three months, known as the "triple talaq" system. After each pronouncement, there is a waiting period, known as "iddah," during which the wife cannot remarry and must await the conclusion of the waiting period to finalize the divorce. During this time, the couple can reconcile if desired. If reconciliation does not occur, the Talaq procedure is finalized. The wife is entitled to maintenance during the iddah period, and the husband is required to provide financial support and fulfill any outstanding obligations.
