In May 1971, I was doing Basic Training at Fort Dix, NJ. One day the DI says you guys are going to march in a parade. So we loaded up on trucks, dressed in khakis and headed to some town in NJ and marched. We had no idea what the parade was about.
I found out recently that Memorial Day became a holiday in 1971. I now know why we marched.

Yep. I asked my dad about this very thing. I didn’t think we were as tough as his generation. He laughed. “Kevin when the call comes you will answer so will your brothers. Just because you haven’t been tested doesn’t mean you aren’t worthy. You will rise to the occasion. I’m not worried.
