Fast and, even more surprising, quiet. Their feet squish out as they step to absorb their weight. I learned this first hand while photographing a family at the Los Angeles Zoo from inside the elephant pen and one "snuck" up behind me. I didn't have a clue until I turned and found myself eyeball-to-eyeball with it.

The reason the elephant has escaped twice is that it was and is being abused by the Circus. How would you feel having your flesh ripped open every day with a sharp hook.
