In March 1996, the USS Nimitz battle group relieved Independence off eastern Taiwan. Previously, the aircraft carrier Independence battle group operated from what her sailors referred to as “Wonton Station” from the 11th–24th. Not to be outdone, Nimitz’s sailors mischievously referred to their operating area as “Kung Pao Station.” Nonetheless, they stood their watches during a frightening situation as tensions rose between Beijing, Taipei and Washington. Chinese Premier Lĭ Péng warned the U.S. not to make a show of force by sending Nimitz into the Taiwan Strait. “The Chinese,” responded Secretary of Defense William J. Perry, “are a great military power, the premier – the strongest–military power in the Western Pacific is the United States. By 29 Mar Diplomatic measures began to diffuse the Chinese crisis and Nimitz came about, transiting the Luzon Strait to operate in the Philippine Sea.
