This is a shame. As a product of the Fairfax County school system from the 80s I am very familiar with the reputation they once had and watched it decline. While all the high schools in the county were considered some of the top public schools in the nation, Thomas Jefferson was always considered the elite. They were known to take highly skilled and exceptional students and it was very difficult to get accepted. I've had a few friends go there and I know co-workers who graduated from there. They are all very disappointed in what FCPS is doing here. The result? Fairfax County has lost much of its reputation and status as a top tiered public school system, more of the exceptional students will go elsewhere (like private schools), and we will continue to wonder why public schools are on the decline. Fairfax County used to be a shining example of great public school system. One that could be benchmarked across the US. They had diversity both in economic class and race and they produced great students.
