North Korea’s descent into extreme poverty did not happen overnight. It previously was rich among Communist nations and even donated humanitarian aid to South Korea during 1984. Its sharp fall during 1990s came from a cumulative combination of international loan default, lack of foreign investment, neglect of infrastructure for nuclear weapons, and economic sanctions.

All controlling communist regimes fail eventually, either through economic downfall or domestic turmoil.
Kim's pursuit of war fighting weapons of mass destruction have led to this economic downfall. His firm grip on the throats of the peasants will ultimately lead to a coup. His killing of high ranking military officers might stave off a coup attempt, but there are always others that follow the lead of the ones taken out.

They remind me of Albania. Albanian's leadership was always saying that Albanian was about to be invaded.
